Technology is about ≈25% of the city's economy, the highest share of any Brazilian capital.

Honest note: Florianópolis is not the cheapest place in Brazil (the 2nd most expensive capital per m²). Families choose it for safety, schools and quality of life, and the manual shows you where the value is.

The things only residents know

Not a travel guide. Locals from Florianópolis wrote the manual and answer the chat: real prices, the right neighbourhoods, which counter actually works and what to say there.

  • Housing

Sign annual leases between March and October: in summer, owners in the north of the island pull apartments for holiday lets and prices jump.

  • Documents

Request your CPF before you fly. It is free, takes about 48 hours by e-mail, and every bank, pharmacy and school will ask for it.

  • Health

In an emergency go to a UPA (open 24h, free, no card needed). For everything else, get your SUS card at the neighbourhood health centre in week one.

  • Vaccines

The whole national calendar is free at the health centre, newcomers' children included. Bring the foreign card; the nurse maps it for you.

  • Neighbourhoods

Families love Campeche and Rio Tavares; Jurerê is the priciest; Kobrasol on the mainland costs about a third less per square metre.

  • Transport

It is buses only. Get the Cartão Cidadão on day one: cheaper fares, and there is no cash on board any more.

  • Money

Pix is how everyone pays, even the man selling coconuts. A digital bank opens your account from the phone once you hold a residence card and CPF.

  • Restaurants

Oysters at Santo Antônio de Lisboa at sunset (book at weekends); the Mercado Público counters are the locals' lunch.

Every tip in the manual carries a date and a source. When something changes, the community tells you first.

One price. Two things you actually need.

Citizen by birth
Your family's documents

Born in Brazil, Brazilian for life

Brazil grants citizenship by birth: a child born here is Brazilian (Constitution, art. 12). The manual walks you through every document, and the community answers what the law does not.

A strong passport

Brazilian citizens travel visa-free or with a visa on arrival to 169 destinations (16th in the Henley Passport Index 2026), including the European Union, the United Kingdom and Japan.

Paperwork, in order

Birth registration at the cartório (free), the child's CPF, the SUS card and the passport at the Polícia Federal: the manual has every form, fee, address and queue tip.

Residence for the parents

Parents of a Brazilian child can apply for residence from inside Brazil, even as visitors, with full right to work. It leads to indefinite residence and, 1 year later, to naturalization.

Ask before you decide

Timing of the birth, health-plan waiting periods, your own country's rules on dual citizenship: locals and licensed professionals answer in the community.

Verified October 2026: Constitution art. 12 I a; Lei 13.445/2017 arts. 37 and 66; Decreto 9.199/2017 art. 221. Information, not legal advice.

Made for families

Most guides are written for backpackers. This one starts with a question: what does a family with children need in the first year?

Expecting a baby?

A child born in Brazil is Brazilian. Prenatal care and childbirth are free in the public system, and parents can apply for residence, with a route to citizenship after one year of indefinite residence.

Private plans can impose up to 300 days' wait for a planned birth. We explain the timing.

Schools, sorted

Public schools are free and must enrol your child even before foreign records are translated. Bilingual and IB schools cost about R$40,000–70,000 a year. We help you visit them.

City public primary schools: top 3 among capitals (IDEB 2025).

Safe streets, calm nights

The lowest homicide rate of any Brazilian capital. Still Brazil: we show you the family neighbourhoods, the habits locals keep and where petty theft clusters.

9.7 per 100,000 vs 26.6 capitals' average (Atlas da Violência 2026).

A real family budget

Rent, condo fees, groceries, health plan, school, internet, transport: real 2026 numbers for a family of four, by neighbourhood, so you can decide before you fly.

Ranges, not promises. Every line has its source and date.

What a family of four spends in Florianópolis

Monthly, in reais, 2026. Ranges, not promises: the manual breaks each line down by neighbourhood.

2–3 bedroom apartment, all-inR$2,600 – 5,500
Groceries and householdR$2,300 – 3,000
Private health plan, two childrenR$240 – 440
Fibre internet, 500 MbR$120
Public school and nurseryR$0
Bilingual or IB school, per childR$3,300 – 5,800

Your Brazilian family from day one

Brazilians are famously welcoming: expats rank them #1 in the world for friendliness towards foreigners. Our community puts that warmth in your pocket, with locals in Florianópolis who answer, check, call and show up.

  1. We land on the 14th. What do we do first?

  2. Day 1: SIM card at the airport, then your CPF appointment, which I'll book for you. Day 3: SUS card at the health centre near your rental. Sending the address now.

  3. Found an apartment in Campeche. They want 3 months upfront before we even visit. Normal?

  4. Red flag. A deposit is capped at 3 months by law, but 'pay before viewing' is a classic scam. Send me the listing and I'll call the agency.

  5. Our daughter has a fever and it's 11pm.

People first

Questions families ask

Which visa or residence route fits my family?
It depends on your situation. Remote workers use the digital-nomad residence (US$1,500 a month in foreign income or US$18,000 in savings), retirees the retirement route (US$2,000 a month), investors the company (R$500,000) or real-estate (R$1,000,000) routes, and parents of a Brazilian child or spouses of a Brazilian use family reunion. Dependants are generally included through family reunion. The manual has a decision tree, the document lists and the 2026 fees.
Do we need a visa just to visit first?
Many nationalities visit Brazil visa-free for up to 90 days. Since April 2025, citizens of the United States, Canada and Australia need an e-visa. The manual lists the entry rule for your passport.
Is free healthcare real for foreigners?
Yes. Brazil's public health system (SUS) is free at the point of use and open to foreign residents by law (Constitution art. 196; Migration Law 13.445/2017). You register at the neighbourhood health centre with your ID and CPF. Emergencies, births, vaccines and primary care work well; specialists can take months, which is why many families add a private plan (from about R$120–220 a month per child).
Can we have our baby in Brazil?
Yes. A child born in Brazil is Brazilian. Prenatal care and childbirth are free in the public system, and parents can apply for residence from inside Brazil, with a route to naturalization after 1 year of indefinite residence. Private health plans can impose up to 300 days' wait for a planned birth, so timing matters. We explain it step by step.
Is Florianópolis safe for children?
It has the lowest homicide rate of all 27 Brazilian state capitals (9.7 per 100,000, Atlas da Violência 2026). It is still Brazil: petty theft concentrates in the centre and in the tourist beaches in summer. The manual maps the family neighbourhoods and the habits locals keep.
How much does a family need per month?
Roughly R$10,000–17,000 for a family of four with public schools, and R$14,000–25,000 with a bilingual or IB school, in 2026. Florianópolis is not the cheapest place in Brazil, but day-to-day costs are about 34% lower than Lisbon and rent is less than half (Numbeo, October 2026). The manual has the full budget by neighbourhood.
Which schools can our kids go to?
Public schools and nurseries are free, and by law they must enrol migrant children even before foreign records are translated. The city's public primary schools rank top 3 among capitals (IDEB 2025). Bilingual and IB schools cost about R$40,000–70,000 a year. The community helps you visit them.
Can I open a bank account as a foreigner?
You need a CPF (free, and you can request it before you travel). Digital banks open a full account from your phone once you hold your residence card. Until then most families use a foreign card or a transfer service. The manual walks you through CPF, account, Pix and bringing money in.
Can I put my savings to work in Brazil?
Residents with a CPF can buy the same products as Brazilians: bank deposits insured up to R$250,000 per person per bank, treasury bonds and tax-exempt notes. They pay around the Central Bank rate, 13.75% a year in September 2026, before tax and in reais, so the currency matters. The manual explains the products, the tax and the risks. This is information, not investment advice.
Do we need to speak Portuguese?
Not to arrive: Florianópolis has more English speakers than most Brazilian cities. To feel at home, yes. 58% of expats say it is hard to get by without it. The community bridges the gap while you learn, and the federal university runs affordable Portuguese courses for foreigners.
Will I pay tax in Brazil?
If you hold indefinite residence, from arrival; otherwise usually after 183 days in Brazil within 12 months. Residents are taxed on worldwide income. Brazil has treaties with many countries (not with the United States). The manual explains the monthly Carnê-Leão and when to hire a cross-border accountant.
Can we bring our dog or cat?
Yes. You need an international veterinary certificate endorsed in your country, a rabies vaccine given at least 21 days before travel and an antiparasitic treatment. There is no quarantine. Plan it two to three months ahead.
Can I drive with my licence?
Yes, for 180 days after entry (with an international permit where required). Then you convert it at DETRAN. The manual has the checklist.
How does delivery work, and what is the guarantee?
Pay once by card or crypto. Within minutes you receive an e-mail with your personal access page: the manual to download and your community invite. If it is not for you, write to us within 14 days and we refund you.
Is this legal, tax or medical advice?
No. The manual and the community give you information, experience and practical help from people who live here. When you need a lawyer, an accountant or a doctor, we point you to licensed professionals.

This could be your new home.

Beaches, a safe city, free public healthcare and schools, a federal university, and people who want you to feel at home. The manual tells you how. The community walks with you.
